The India Venster trail starts about 50m to the right of the lower Aerial Cableway Station on Table Mountain Road. Right where the bus parking ends and takes some formal steps to get going. The steps are often concealed by the buses that are parked in the area. So keep your eyes open for them. Once you spot it, follow the path as it will lead you straight to the Contour Path. Although it is quite steep, the path contains a well-constructed step section that is situated directly under the cables of the cableway. Walking up to the Contour Path will take you between 15 – 20 minutes. Thereby providing you with a good warm-up to conquer the rest of the India Venster Table Mountain climb.

When you reach the Contour Path, you will see a green sign pointing to both your left and to your right. The route officially starts behind that sign post up the mountain. You will see blue and/or green spray paint marks and yellow footprints that outline the path. This is when you know you’re at the right place. Follow the outlined path indicated by the spray paint marks and yellow footprints on the rocks. Although India Venster is a popular choice for avid hikers and lovers of the outdoors, it’s challenging and technical nature also makes it one of the more confusing routes up Table Mountain. As you near the top of your summit you will notice a square concrete building up to your right. Just before you reach it, you will encounter a split in your trail. If you intend to descend Table Mountain by means of the Platteklip Gorge trail (as India Venster is not recommended for descend due to its steepness) then head past the square concrete building to meet the end of the Platteklip Gorge trail. From here, follow the signs that will direct you to the Upper Cableway Station which is about a 10min walk. If you decide to go to the left when you reach the split in your trail, you will end up on top of the ‘table’ portion of Table Mountain. This is a fairly wide and built-up path. From there turn left to make your way to the Upper Cableway Station.

From the starting point at the lower Aerial Cableway Station, the India Venster route will gradually ascend the gully on the west side of the right buttress of Table Mountain (also known as the ‘Venster’ buttress). After about 20 minutes of hiking you will almost find yourself directly on top of the buttress. It is important to take a moment to take in the view, it’s pretty spectacular! From there you will make your way below the rock amphitheatre and the cables of the cableway. As India Venster is one of Table Mountain’s steeper ascends, it can get quite tiring. A relatively good fitness level and stamina is therefore highly recommended when hiking this route. The last thing you want is to get lost and stranded on India Venster, not sure how to make your way back. Besides a challenging climb, India Venster certainly has a few hidden gems located along the route. In addition to the three main rock climbing “crags” on Table Mountain, keep an eye open for ‘The Ledge’, ‘Fountain Ledge’ and ‘African Ledge’ as well as the ‘Lily Pond’ (aptly named due to it being embraced by Arum lily plants) as you make your way to the top. Before the ‘Lily Pond’ you will also find an overhang where you can have a break and cool off in the shade. This is locally referred to as the “Tea Cave”.

Due to the extreme steepness of the hiking trail, descending via India Venster is not recommended. Especially in less than favourable weather conditions. If you do however want to continue your hiking adventure, rather opt to descend via one of Table Mountain’s less demanding routes like Platteklip Gorge.
