The Grand Parade in the Cape Town CBD will come to life for a beach volleyball and lifestyle festival from the 2nd to the 6th of November, with 1000 cubic meters of sand trucked in to create four beach volleyball courts to host the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour. The tournament, from is a triumph for the City of Cape Town, the local tourism economy, and the residents of Cape Town.

What is the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour all about

The Beach Pro Tour is the worldwide professional beach volleyball tour for both men and women organised by Volleyball World and the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). Winning the Beach Pro Tour is one of the highest honours in international beach volleyball, with only the World Championships and the Olympic beach volleyball tournaments considered to be more prestigious.

The current format started in 2022 and is now called the Beach Pro Tour comprising three tiers:

  • Future
  • Challenge
  • Elite 16

The Elite 16 round is being held in Cape Town with the top 16 men’s and top 16 women’s teams travelling from all over the world to take part.

South Africa will be represented amongst the 16 Elite teams by Leo Williams and Grant Goldschmidt, using the Wild Card entry given to the host nation. The pair represented SA in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this year. A further three SA teams will play in the qualification tournament, amongst them a female team.

The event promoter has secured the ten-year contract to host the tour, in partnership with the City of Cape Town. As well as the Beach Pro Tour matches, display matches will form part of the schedule along with top-class entertainment, making this a must-attend party for residents and visitors to the city.

Adam Brown (Cape Umoya), Local Promoter and Tournament Director, says: “We are delighted to bring this prestigious sporting and lifestyle event to Cape Town. Cape Town is synonymous with world-class sporting events, beaches, a foody and party lifestyle, and a rich cultural heritage. With the City of Cape Town, we are looking to build this into an annual must-attend festival of sport, lifestyle and culture, set to the backdrop of Table Mountain and the Cape Town City’s historical Town Hall.”

The event will be working with local communities to deliver Legacy Projects: “Volleyball World is committed to investing in the communities where their tournaments are held, and these initiatives will ensure that the event ignites interest in volleyball amongst local residents and creates the impetus to perhaps one day field a beach volleyball team at the Olympic Games again. Sustainability is also a key component of our mandate and we have a number of plans in this regard which we will share in due course,” says Brown.

JP Smith, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, says: “Cape Town has been voted the World’s Leading Festival and Event Destination for three of the last four years at the World Travel Awards in part due to the city’s versatile event offering. Adding the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour to Cape Town’s events calendar really enhances the city’s reputation as an events capital, as we have not had a major beach volleyball event in some time. For the City of Cape Town, hosting major international events contributes significantly to the economy through job creation, visitor spending at our tourism attractions, retail and accommodation. We are looking forward to welcoming the competitors and visitors who will be coming down to enjoy the action on the court.’

Llewellyn Rhoda, CEO of 2 Oceans Academy, who delivers the legacy element for the tournament, believes that the international event will inspire young people not only in Cape Town but the entire continent. The legacy programme kicked off on 1 October 2022 and was a huge success as kids were introduced to beach volleyball for the first time. The 2nd event is scheduled for 15 October 2022 and the third for 29-30 October 2022 where the kids will get a chance to play on the same courts that the elite athletes will play on.”

CARES (Culture, Arts, Recreation, Education and Sport) is coordinating aspects of the Legacy Project that Rhoda says has a 5-year plan to create ten sports facilities in Cape Town. The sand from the tournament will be used to build a 44 x 30-metre sports court at KU CARES, for beach soccer, beach tennis, beach netball and beach volleyball programmes.

“We will be including about 500 kids, to watch and be a part of the tournament every day of the event, employing some youngsters as ball retrievers and scorekeepers.”

Anthony Mokoena, Volleyball South Africa President, says it has been eight years since a World Series Beach volleyball event was hosted in South Africa: “The hugely successful FIVB Manguang Beach volleyball event for both genders was widely praised by both players and the FIVB. I am pleased that our hard work in the promotion of volleyball and Beach volleyball caught the attention of the FIVB who have selected us for the rapid development of Beach volleyball in our country. We are the recipients of development programmes, including an accredited beach volleyball coach from Australia to fast-track our athletes to compete internationally. I am confident that once again Volleyball South Africa, the City of Cape Town, and the promoter, will successfully host a world-class event.”

‘Floribunda’, a solo exhibition by Leigh Tuckniss, is a collection of artwork centred on love, loss, grief and identity. This is a love story that is a yearlong excavation of the self.

Leigh Tuckniss, visual artist based in Cape Town, investigates, explores and depicts the shared dualities of what it means to be human through the flower as the signifier. In this exhibition this inclusion of the dead flowers is curiously explored as a small installation. The dying and wilting in her vase, the currency of giving and receiving bouquets of flowers in both moments of despair and celebration, the idea of death being beautiful. This is the core of Tuckniss’ work.

Join them for the opening night of ‘Floribunda’ on the 3rd of November from 6pm – 8:30 pm at Artist Admin, Roeland street.

#Go tobogganing at Cool Runnings

Top Things To Do In Cape Town This Weekend

The first downhill tobogganing track in Africa, Cool Runnings is a Cape Town-based family park boasting an intricate course of steel tracks and top-notch, wheeled bobsleds.

Go hurtling down a half-pipe in a bobsled, flying through the twists and curves as you race along the 1.25 km track. It’s fun for kids and adults, and it’s completely safe and the combination of speed and skill makes it a thrilling challenge for even the most die-hard speed freak.

Starting at the foot Durbanville’s slopes, you settle into your toboggan and set off as the cables in the tracks haul you to the start of the course (a relief for anyone thinking they’d have to climb the hill every time!).

Once at the top, it’s just you, the toboggan, the brake lever – and the spectacular view of Cape Town. Cruise through the 17 corners, S-bends and even a tunnel, before the sled automatically slows down at the bottom of the course, safe and sound. Perfect for a day out with the family, friends or colleagues, Cool Runnings is a one-stop destination, with a café serving up delicious boerie rolls, burgers and pizza, and a bar to quench your thirst. Best of all? It won’t burn a hole in your wallet!

#Go to the famous Gin Bar

Bring on the GIN! Known as one of Cape Town’s coolest hidden gems, hippest hangouts, and favourite Gin nirvanas, The Gin Bar should be right at the top of your ‘Things to do in Cape Town’ list!

At The Gin Bar, they take their gin seriously – VERY seriously – as they pride themselves on making the entire experience all about the star of the show – THE GIN! Oh, and you of course! So, if you’re a head-over-heels gin-lover at heart, the legendary Gin Bar is without a doubt where you should be at.

**Interesting fact: Did you know that the Gin Bar was one of the first bars in the Mother City to dedicate itself to all things gin? Thereby making it the true OG of the Cape Town gin scene. It is also one of the country’s only true speak-easy bars – how incredible is that?

As the name suggests, all the signature cocktails at The Gin Bar contain Gin, well, besides the virgins of course. The menu is concise and definitely favours quality over quantity, just as it should be. If you’re not much of a gin lover, no problem! They also offer a selection of amazing classic cocktails to choose from.

When it comes to their much-loved signature cocktails, The Gin Bar cleverly named their classic five cocktails The Head, The Heart, The Hope, The Soul, and The Ambition, all intended to provide their drinker with as much needed healing for whatever may ail them. Undoubtedly adding an extra unique and personalised touch to the already bucket-list worthy experience.

Fondly known by Cape Town locals as the ‘secret’ Gin bar, mainly due to its hush-hush, unmarked location hidden behind a cool Chocolate Café, Honest Chocolate, and nestled in a Mediterranean-style secret courtyard – Going to The Gin Bar is one experience you absolutely cannot afford to miss!

The Bubbly Bar

The Gin Bar has added a new exciting addition to their already impressive repertoire – The Bubbly Bar! This little bar is a celebration of local crafters making some of the best bubbly in the world. Our South African version of Champagne is called Cap Classique and is just as good as the French version in our (and many others’) opinion. Some local makers also experiment with unusual grape varietals to produce flavour experiences that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

The tasting flight of 5 different producers is highly recommended. If you love bubbly then this little bar is for you!
