Cape Town Culinary Tours has a strong community focus. The culinary tours are a great way to bridge the gap between local restaurants, and the influx of foreign travellers into the city. It’s also the perfect opportunity for local Capetonians to experience a different side of their hometown.

Currently Cape Town Culinary Tours offer two tour options, with plans to expand in the near future. Choose between the Cape Town Essentials Food Tour (4 hours) and the Cape Town Food Safari (3.5 hours).

The Cape Town Essentials Food Tour

Duration: 4 hours

This tour meanders on the edge of the Bo-Kaap, through De Waterkant/Greenpoint and into the V&A Waterfront. The tour offers you historical insight into the areas through culinary and cultural exploration.

These areas are rich in both local and international influences. They all contribute to the ever-evolving food scene of Cape Town. Food tasting includes local Cape Malayan dishes and other traditional South African spots.

Meandering between the Bo-Kaap and the V&A Waterfront will also offer you more insight into how the diverse elements of the city fits together. Embrace the Capetonian lifestyle in a relaxed and safe environment. See why the city has been voted the best in the world six times in a row.

Tour Logistics

Transportation to the starting point not included. The tours are offered Tuesdays to Saturdays, starting at 11:00AM from De Waterkant. It ends in the V&A Waterfront. Deliciousness guaranteed! By the end of the tour you will agree that local is “lekker”.

The Cape Town Food Safari

Duration: 3.5 Hours

This tour meanders through the Cape Town City Centre (CBD). Safari means “journey” in Swahili. This culinary tour is an African-inspired journey, weaving through the Mother City’s historical city centre. Sample food infused with African flavours as well as the best local culinary delights.

Cape Town is a truly cosmopolitan city and in the heart of Cape Town you will experience a variety of African cultures and traditions, all perfectly blended together. You will stop at a few of the city’s best kept culinary secret spots. From Tanzanian to Ethiopian food, you will also learn more about the migrants that now call the Mother City their home. A highlight of the tour, is the Senegalese coffee presentation. Enjoy traditional African dishes and traditional Capetonian food and drink. Follow the locals’ daily “foodie” routine through the streets of Cape Town

Tour Logistics

Transportation to starting point not included. The tours are offered Tuesdays to Saturdays, starting at 2:30PM. The tour starts in the City Centre, on Strand Street and ends in Wale Street.

The Cape Town Culinary Tours are one of a kind food and drink experiences, with a great authentic edge. Plus it’s a lot of fun. There are also customizable tour options available upon request. It’s a great option as a team building outing. Or simply for a group of friends wanting to celebrate the amazing culinary delights of Cape Town. A private tour can be arranged, including up to 60 guests.

These tours are offered all year around. The cost includes all the food and drink tastings and you have your own private tour guide at your disposal.

Is there alcohol included on the tour?

You will be enjoying a minimum of two alcohol tastings on each tour type.

What should I bring along?

Make sure you wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes. The weather in Cape Town is notoriously fickle, so be prepared for anything. Even in the high summer a cool wind can pick up. And even in winter, you still need sunscreen against the potent African sun. Bring along a small bottle of water.

If I do not eat red meat/meat how does this influence my tour?

Taking out red meat or cheese from the tour will change it, but the Cape Town Culinary Tours team will make a plan to still offer an enjoyable experience to vegetarians and non-meat eaters. One of the stops on the tours does include a butchery, if you want to rather request skipping it, please advise the tour guide beforehand.

Is there parking available?

Most of the Cape Town city centre operates on paid street parking, which can become pricey for an extended period of time. It’s best to rather use local transport such as Uber, Taxify or the MyCiti bus.

Are gratuities included?

You can enjoy the culinary experience without worrying about tipping the vendors. The Cape Town Culinary Tours company has built extensive relationship with the local vendors. Although not mandatory, you are welcome to add a gratuity. In South Africa the standard gratuity is 15% to 25%.
