#We Are Still Here Memrial
The We Are Still Here Memorial is a remarkably powerful piece of artwork. Created by mosaic artists Lovell Friedman and Leora Lewis, it memorializes the 7,000 children that were advertised as destitute in the Cape Government Gazette between 1841 and 1921.
These children, some as young as eight-years-old, were often found roaming the streets of Cape Town. If no one came forward to claim or support them after the ad was run, they were sold as indentured laborers to the highest bidders.
The Memorial is made up of copies of these advertisements which were put together in such a way to reflect the image of a child, surrounded by drawings and heart-felt written work by current street kids.
Situated just outside the Cape Town Central Library, in Long market Pedestrian Mall, the We Are Still Here Memorial is a powerful and compelling landmark and proclamation that absolutely everyone who visits Cape Town should see.

#Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George

St. George’s Cathedral, also known as the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George, was built in 1904 for the Greek community of Cape Town. The remarkable artwork painted by the Romanian priest and hagiographer Father Nikolai during the 1990’s portrays Byzantine-style frescoes which decorate the vaults, walls, and apse with depictions of Jesus and various other saints and icons. It is nothing short of exceptional! The domed ceilings of the Cathedral are painted light blue and dotted with stars, and when the light shines in through the stained-glass windows, it is as if you are transported east to the shining Mediterranean.
In 1968, St. George’s was accorded cathedral status and became the seat of the Orthodox Archbishopric of Good Hope, Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa. The archdiocese presides over the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape provinces, the Orange Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.
Hidden in a little spot in Woodstock, perched almost atop the hill on Mountain Road, St. George’s Cathedral is a beautiful, and equally remarkable, Cape Town hidden gem and iconic landmark.

Dedicated to all things books, the Centre For The Book, located in Cape Town’s city bowl, is one of the finest examples of Edwardian architecture in the city. Beyond its literary significance, the building itself is something to be admired. The ceremonial hall is based on an ancient Greek theatre and features a dome which rises 56 feet with a base made from Paarl granite. The gorgeous domed atrium of the central reading room is the venue for concerts and is often hired for weddings and other functions.
The Centre For The Book is dedicated to promoting a culture of reading, writing and publishing in local languages. It also represents the National Library’s outreach arm and aims to increase access to books for all.
