The spirit of Mandela Day is all about taking action, inspiring change, and making a difference.
Commemorated on July 18 — Nelson Mandela’s birthday — Nelson Mandela International Day, or simply Mandela Day, is an international observance in honor of the revolutionary Nelson Mandela & celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact. Every year, Nelson Mandela Day shines a light on the legacy of a man whose monumental achievements changed the 20th century and shaped the 21st. His values and determination — a deep commitment to human rights, freedom, and justice — are reflected on, and are a source of inspiration for others.
This international day of celebration is a global movement and call to action, inspiring individuals, communities, and organisations to dedicate 67 minutes – symbolizing the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for social justice – to make a positive impact in their own communities. This day shows the true spirit of “Ubuntu,” an African philosophy that talks about community and humanity.
Whether you choose to volunteer, give, collaborate, share, donate or contribute to your community as part of a larger group or simply on your own, every act of service, big or small, contributes to the ripple effect of positive change that Mandela Day strives to create.
Here are some great initiatives, incredible causes, and impactful things to do in Cape Town for Mandela Day.

These guys are rockstars when it comes to getting school supplies into the hands of kids who really need them. Imagine a kid trying to learn without a notebook or pen. **Packing a box is super easy: All you need to do is grab some new pens, pencils, notebooks, erasers, and maybe a funky ruler – it’s entirely up to you! Once you have all your cool stationary goodies, put them in a box & decorate it (yip, it’s time to go wild & get creative) with a small message of encouragement, and Pebbles Project will deliver it to a deserving student. How incredible is that?!
Running short on time? No sweat! You can sponsor a box online & let the Pebbles Project do the shopping for you! Donating a box might seem small, but it shows a kid that there is someone out there that cares about them & wants to set them up for success in school.
This Mandela Day, Pebbles Project is helping you honour Madiba’s legacy by giving every child the chance to shine. So, what are you waiting for? Pack a box, sponsor a box, and make this Mandela Day truly count!

#Pack Food Parcels with Feed The Nation Foundation
- Where: 101 Rosmead Avenue, Kenilworth, Cape Town
- Cost: R10 – R250
- Contact details: [email protected]
- Website: www.feedthenation.org
Taking place on Thursday, the 18th of July 2024 Nelson Mandela Day is a global call to action! We all know Madiba was a huge advocate for fighting hunger, so why not honour his legacy by dedicating some time to this cause? This year, join Feed The Nation to pack food parcels for all the people & families that need it most! Filling bags with hearty goodness is a GREAT way to spend your 67 minutes for Mandela Day.
Each of Feed The Nation’s food parcels are jam-packed with nutrient-dense food as recommended by their in-house dietician. The quantities have been calculated to provide a family of four with approximately 6000kJ in energy-giving foods. This includes 50g protein (the minimum requirements for growth), vitamin and mineral-enriched foods (to boost immune function) and servings of fruit and vegetables. This INCREDIBLE initiative is SO much more than just packing groceries; it’s about putting healthy, delicious, and nutritious food on a family’s / someone’s table and making a real difference.
Plus, as an added bonus, volunteering is a real blast & knowing you’re making a difference in someone’s life while doing it is incredibly enriching. It also gives you the opportunity to work alongside other amazing people, all with the same mission: fighting hunger. Your contribution – big or small – gives you the extraordinary opportunity to be part of a much bigger movement that honours Mandela’s legacy. Madiba strongly believed in working together, and that’s exactly what Feed The Nation is all about!
Be a part of something truly great this Mandela Day & dedicate your 67 minutes to helping Feed The Nation pack food parcels, all while celebrating the values Madiba so proudly stood for – compassion, equality, and making the world a better place.
