Looking for a new adventure in Cape Town? So were we! Cape Town has more hidden gems and ‘hole in the wall’ spots than we can even count. SecretEATS offers an experience where Capetonians can enjoy delicious food and mouth-watering drinks while exploring perhaps unusual locations in the Mother City.

The Secret Cape Town team were delighted to receive an invite to one of these top-secret events in June. The excitement built up throughout the week, wondering where we’re going and what’s in store. On the day of the event, we were sent only GPS coordinates for an address in the CBD, and so, with Google maps as our guide, the adventure began…

We arrived on Shortmarket street, standing in front of an old white Victorian door. With a hard knock, it opened, and we whispered the password word “Elemental Experience” to gain entrance. We were welcomed to a room with a checkered floor, a world of black and white, art, history, and wonder. The top-secret location was one of Cape Town’s favorite galleries – Gallery F!

Gallery F is an archive of vintage black and white photography from South African photographers depicting South African life – photos that might have been lost or long forgotten if it hadn’t been for owner Gary Furlonger’s keen eye and preservation. We made our way up the spiral staircase gazing at the inspirational prints that embellished the walls, mingling with other guests, while sipping on a gin like no other. With floral aromas and tart grapefruit, we were under Juniper Moon Gin’s spell.

Our anticipation building, it finally came to the main section of the event – THE DINING!

The SecretEATS team opened the door to the main gallery – a beautifully decorated table, styled by Host the Event, surrounded by greenery and more beautiful prints. As we got settled in our seats, Chef Jeremy Taylor came out to greet us and let us know what was in store. He had designed a 4 course menu inspired by the four elements; Earth, Fire, Water and Air, paired with specially crafted cocktails by local mixologists, Cross Concoctions.

1st course

“Earth – Lions mane infused falafel, beetroot hummus, 5 spice cauliflower puree, roasted chickpeas and picked vegetables. Paired with a Basil Smash cocktail.”

2nd course

“Water – Pan fried angelfish on a Thai green sauce, served with roasted sweet potato cubes, coconut flakes and micro herbs. Paired with a Dark and Stormy cocktail.”

Conversation was flowing and our tastebuds were being satisfied by incredible flavors. We got to know the owner of the venue and made good friends with the Chef… and his food. Did we mention the music? Local songbird, Fay Lamour has the voice of an angel. She enchanted us with her melodies, enhancing the atmosphere.

3rd course

“Fire – Sous vide grass fed beef fillet with dauphinoise potatoes, caramelised onions, seasonal greens, exotic mushrooms with a special Angostura bitters jus. Paired with an Old-Fashioned cocktail.”

As our dessert plates were cleared, we enjoyed the last few sips of our final cocktail and reluctantly wished our new friends goodbye. What a night! Thank you SecretEATS. We will definitely be back for more!
