Tafelberg Road falls under the category of a suburban pass and snakes its way along the Table Mountain.
The road starts with a steep climb from the parking lot at the top of Kloof Nek. The road levels out at the lower cableway station. From the lower cable station, the road continues for another four kilometres across the northern side of Table Mountain before ending at Devil’s Peak.
With its few gentle climbs and declines, Tafelberg Road offers beautiful smooth curves for cyclists and hikers in Cape Town.
This recreational road is a very popular walking road for locals, especially on fine windless days. During the first stages of the walk, the road offers a spectacular view of the Lion’s Head. Soon enough views of the V&A Waterfront and ocean will unfold and at the end part of the road, you will witness the amazing views of the City Bowl.
Tafelberg Road is the easiest route to devil’s peak which is further along from the lower cable car station. After the Devil’s Peak trailhead, the road is restricted to foot traffic and bicycles as some parts of the road have fallen away caused by frequent rock falls.
When planning for a walk or a cycling trip along Tafelberg road, checking the weather update and observing necessary safety precautions is a must.
Also along Tafelberg Road and a few hundred meters past the lower cableway station, you can find the trailhead of the easiest route up the Table Mountain, the Platteklip Gorge.
Don’t forget to hike or bike along Tafelberg Road on next visit to Cape Town!
