#THE BLUE TRAIN PARK

he Blue Train Park has been in operation for more than 60 years. The property is approximately 10,000m2, less than 25m from the Atlantic Ocean with a backdrop of Lions head, Signal Hill and Table Mountain. Now an iconic feature to Cape Town’s beautiful seaside landscape, this park with its miniature blue train captures the youthful fantasies of both young and old.

It is also possible to climb Table Mountain from Kirstenbosch, up Nursery Ravine or Skeleton Gorge.

#VISIT STONY POINT NATURE RESERVE
- Location: Stony Point Penguin Colony, Betty’s Bay, Cape Overberg Region, Western Cape
While Boulders Beach is one of Cape Town’s top tourist attractions, with everyone jumping at the bid to see its thriving African Penguin colony, very few people know that Stony Point Nature Reserve is home to one of the largest successful breeding colonies of African Penguins in the world. Located in the coastal town of Betty’s Bay (approximately 90km from Cape Town), Stony Point Nature Reserve gives visitors the opportunity to witness Cape Town’s favourite ocean locals, the cool and charismatic African Penguins, up-close in their natural habitat by means of boardwalks that wind through the reserve.
African Penguins aren’t the only marine life or wildlife you’ll have the pleasure of seeing when visiting this Cape Nature reserve. The reserve is home to a colony of cormorants which includes three species: The Crowned cormorant, Cape cormorant and Bank cormorant, all of which breed on the outer rocks. There are also Hartlaub’s Gulls and Kelp Gulls which forage in the colony, while the infamous Rock Hyrax, more commonly known as the Dassie, can frequently be spotted on the various surrounding rocks.
The Stony Point Nature Reserve is wheelchair and walking stick friendly and welcomes people of all ages to see and explore its scenic surroundings and incredible marine life.

Make your way along Chapman’s Peak Drive until you reach the famous Chapman’s Peak Lookout Point – This is where the real adventure begins!
Positioned just below the pass, you’ll have to climb over the railing and carefully make your way down the mountainside to reach the Lookout Cave. Once you’ve reached this cool secret hideaway and stunning sunset spot, it’s time to sit back, relax and soak it all in. The sheltered sand-stone cave boasts the perfect view over Hout Bay and Atlantic Ocean. An extra bonus is that it has enough space to enjoy a picnic and a few sundowners paired with one hell of a view.
Besides these two must-visit secret spots, there are a variety of look-out points and picnic sites located at various points along the drive. Chapman’s Peak Drive is also known as one of the best places to spot the beloved members of Cape Town’s Marine Big 5. #SPEND THE DAY AT NEWLANDS FOREST
As part of the Table Mountain National Park, Newlands Forest is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Newlands Forest offers a variety of shaded picnic spots that are not only spacious and fairly private, but also have concrete tables, chairs, and fire pits for braaiing. Providing you with everything you need to enjoy a wonderful day out in nature with friends and family. This, together with the tranquility of the forest, makes it one of the best picnic and outdoor braai spots in Cape Town.

The beautiful Arderne Gardens is the perfect picturesque garden escape from the hustle and bustle of the inner-city. Situated in the heart of Cape Town’s southern suburbs, the Arderne Gardens is renowned for its exotic trees and Japanese-style ponds.
Besides being one of the best gardens in Cape Town to visit, this natural gem has become a popular location for fun family outings, picnics in the park and any-time-of-the-day strolls. Its resident ducks, guinea fowl and fish, has made it a real fan-favorite for the kiddies, as well as the adults of course!
There are tons of beautiful walkways that meander through the garden inviting you to sit back and relax and enjoy the blissful solitude. However, if you’re an adventurer and nature lover at heart, the walkways are perfect for exploring all the fauna and flora the Arderne Gardens has to offer.
**Fun fact: The Arderne Gardens is home to the one of the largest trees in Africa known locally as the Wedding Tree.
#ST JAMES TIDAL POOL & COASTAL WALK
While Cape Town has no shortage of incredible tidal pools (read our post Cape Town’s 19 Amazing Tidal Pools to make sure you visit them all), the St James Tidal Pool is undoubtedly one of the best. Not to mention a real fan-favourite among the young and young at heart.
How to get there: Situated close to the Muizenberg station, you will need to cross over the train tracks and follow the winding concrete path that meanders along the coast. Once you’ve reached your desired destination, a refreshing dip in the cool St James tidal pool waters is an absolute must! It really is the perfect Cape Town summer holiday activity for the whole family.
Besides the not-to-be-missed St James Tidal Pool, the St James coastal walk, which stretches between Muizenberg and St James, sure gives the Sea Point promenade a run for its money. Once known as Cape Town’s Golden Mile, this stunning walkway boasts sensational views right throughout.
As the vibrant False Bay coastline is known for its plethora of thriving marine life, be sure to keep a look out for some thrilling sightings of Cape Town’s beloved ocean locals – African Penguins, dolphins, whales, and of course the wonderful Cape Fur Seal!
The path is concreted the entire way and begins just behind Muizenberg’s railway station (It is highly recommended that you park up that end, rather than at the beach).
Feel free to enjoy the St James coastal walk barefooted (if you so desire), but, as a word of warning, the fishermen tend to leave their tackle on the path whilst fishing just out in front of it, so make sure you’re extra vigilant.
While taking a stroll along the ever-beautiful St James coastal walk is a fantastic and fun time for all regardless of the time of day, the very best time to do this walk is during low tide.

Established in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), the historical Company’s Garden forms a unique oasis in the heart of Cape Town’s inner-city. #HAVE A PICNIC AT TOKAI FOREST
Situated within the Table Mountain National Park, the serene woodlands of the Tokai Forest boast several stunning picnic sites open to the public. It also has a braai area located on the edge of the Tokai Plantation.
You will need to pay a small entrance fee to access and use the facilities, but once you’re in, the entire forest is open to you, ready to be explored. There are several amazing forested areas that offer protection from the sun, open green spaces, and fixed braai and picnic spots.
For those looking to add a bit more adventure to their day, Tokai Forest has tons of thrilling trails and walking routes for nature lovers to enjoy. The wide open spaces also makes it perfect for families looking to enjoy a fun day out.

The Stanford Wandelpad walking trail meanders along the Klein River, and is easily accessible from several points. However, a map is available at the local tourism bureau just in case.

The Jonkershoek Nature Reserve is one natural gem that should be on every nature lover’s bucket-list. Located close to Stellenbosch, the reserve includes the smaller Assegagaai Nature Reserve and is home to the imposing Jonkershoek Mountains as well as portions of the upper Jonkershoek Valley.
It boasts two popular and equally thrilling hiking trails, both of which offer beautiful views of the valley and wine farms below. Besides enjoying an exciting hike, taking a dip in the clear river water is by far one of the top highlights of visiting the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.

#Klipgat Cave, Gansbaai
Nestled within the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, a mere three kilometres from the idyllic De Kelders fishing village, Klipgat Cave is another one of Cape Town’s best secret caves and coolest hidden gems.
Beyond its stunning surroundings and spectacular views, Klipgat Cave has quite a bit of history behind it. The cave reached cultural, historical and world heritage significance due to the 1992 excavation when 70 000-year-old human bones and stone tools were discovered within the cave. These bones and stone tools were believed to be left behind by the native Khoikhoi bushman. This undoubtedly adds an extra dose of mystery and thrill to your experience.
Besides its rich history, exploring Klipgat Cave is a real adventure. It boasts two chambers: The first chamber has a rugged rocky surface and leads to the ocean. The second chamber is made up of a small entryway that leads to the main cave excavation site. There is also a boardwalk that circles around the historical site.

The hike to reach the Woodstock Cave is relatively easy and doesn’t require a great deal of hiking experience. **Extra Tip: Don’t hike this route alone. It’s always best to hike in a group when hiking any of Cape Town’s hiking trails.
#Lookout Cave, Chapman’s Peak
The Lookout Cave is not only one of Cape Town’s top secret caves, but one of Chapmans Peak Drive’s most beautiful hidden gems and best secret sunset spots too. Like all of the Mother City’s best kept secrets, you may need to wander a little off the beaten path to find it.
Make your way along Chapman’s Peak Drive until you reach the famous Chapman’s Peak Lookout Point – This is where the real adventure begins! Positioned just below the pass, you’ll have to climb over the railing and carefully make your way down the mountainside to reach the Lookout Cave.
An extra bonus is that this Chapmans Peak hidden gem has enough space to enjoy a picnic and a few sundowners paired with one hell of a view.
#Waenhuiskrans Cave, Arniston
Located just off the sandy shoreline of Arniston, the Waenhuiskrans Cave is undoubtedly one of Cape Town’s best secret caves to explore. Arniston is a small seaside town on the coast of the Overberg region of the Western Cape, approximately 3 hours from the city of Cape Town. It is home to white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and a stunning shipwreck-strewn coastline rich in history and heritage. But, by far one of its best kept secrets and hidden natural gems is the Waenhuiskrans Cave.
Due to its secret location, the Waenhuiskrans Cave can only be accessed during low tide when you are able to make your way through the shallow waters to the entrance of the cave.
Inside the Waenhuiskrans Cave you’ll discover several rockpools, as well as plenty of rock-dwelling marine life that have decided to take up residence inside the cave. If you’re an avid adventurer and keen explorer, a trip to the Waenhuiskrans Cave in Arniston should definitely be on your Cape Town bucket-list.
**Tip: The Waenhuiskrans Cave can ONLY be accessed during low tide. For your own safety it is vital that you do not attempt the hike at any other point of the day. Take only the essentials along when making your way to the cave. Due to the slippery, seaweed-strewn rocks that lie beneath the water’s surface as you navigate your way to the cave, it is important that you wear shoes that are appropriate for traversing slippery rock beds. #EXPLORE THE UPPER LIESBEEK RIVER GARDEN

- Important note: The Upper Liesbeek River Garden is a strict no-litter area – visitors are requested to take their litter home with them. While the garden is dog-friendly, they must be kept on leads and owners are required to pick up their dog’s mess.
The Upper Liesbeek River Garden is somewhat of secret spot and natural gem all wrapped up into one. This piece of nature’s paradise is situated in the heart of (sub)urban Cape Town, upstream of the Paradise Road intersection on the M3. The Protea and window streams meet to form a single peaceful river that runs through Newlands, Rondebosch, Rosebank, and Observatory before joining the Black River and emptying out into Table Bay.
Besides a beautiful river and the peaceful serenity and tranquillity that comes along with it, the Upper Liesbeek River Garden boasts plenty of scenic paths, a stunning diversity of flora, lovely picnic areas and an array of benches where you can sit back, relax and soak it all in. The park is also wheelchair friendly, with access via a wooden ramp, however there are no paved pathways.
**Fun fact: The area is maintained and rehabilitated with donations from the residents of Bishopscourt Village and Fernwood.
#VISIT WYNBERG PARK
A real fan- favorite among locals, Wynberg Park is one of the most popular braai and picnic spots in Cape Town. Wynberg Park boasts over 22 hectares of beautiful gardens, with the luscious lawns being the perfect destination for enjoying fun-filled picnics and braais with ample braai and picnic spots scattered about. Besides large lushes lawns for lounging, lazy strolls, and tons of running around, the park has a fully equipped kids play area and a duck pond. The Wynberg Park is also the source of the Krakeelwater River and is well known for its conifer garden and the colorful display of hydrangeas in the summer – making it a top spot to visit for nature lovers.

#STRAWBERRY PICKING AT POLKADRAAI

#VISIT OUDEKRAAL BEACH & HAVE A BRAAI
Tucked away in a sheltered cove between Camps Bay and Llandudno, Oudekraal is not only one of the top beaches in Cape Town, but one of the best braai spots too. It has approximately 40 private braai spots scattered along the lawns above the sheltered cove and sandy beach below.
Oudekraal is also one of the top beaches for enjoying a fun-filled family beach day. The beach is surrounded by large granite boulders that keep big waves at bay, making it the ideal place to swim, especially for the little ones. #WE ARE STILL HERE MEMORIAL
The We Are Still Here Memorial is a remarkably powerful piece of artwork. Created by mosaic artists Lovell Friedman and Leora Lewis, it memorializes the 7,000 children that were advertised as destitute in the Cape Government Gazette between 1841 and 1921.
These children, some as young as eight-years-old, were often found roaming the streets of Cape Town. If no one came forward to claim or support them after the ad was run, they were sold as indentured laborers to the highest bidders.
The Memorial is made up of copies of these advertisements which were put together in such a way to reflect the image of a child, surrounded by drawings and heart-felt written work by current street kids.
Situated just outside the Cape Town Central Library, in Long market Pedestrian Mall, the We Are Still Here Memorial is a powerful and compelling landmark and proclamation that absolutely everyone who visits Cape Town should see.
