This Song Is For… is a series of dedication songs chosen by survivors of sexual violence, which are performed as covers by women-led and/or gender-nonconforming ensembles.
In each song a disruption occurs at a certain point, creating in the words of Goliath an opportunity for listeners to “inhabit a contested space of traumatic recall – one in which the de-subjectifying violence of rape and its psychic afterlives becomes painfully entangled with personal and political claims to life, dignity, hope, faith, even joy.”
South African multimedia artist, gender advocate, and 2019’s Standard Bank Young Artist award winner for Visual Art, Gabrielle Goliath is deeply concerned with questions of violence, and the precarity of black, brown, feminine and queer bodies. She has exhibited her work across South Africa and internationally and was granted a Special Award at the prestigious Future Generation Art Prize.
Due to limited space, those interested in the opening or walkabout are advised to RSVP in advance.
